Upcoming Sunday School Courses

The adult Sunday School classes of New Heights meet at 9:30 a.m. and they are vital to the spiritual health of each individual and our church body.  These classes are devoted to deeply studying God’s word, theology, and ministry with the purpose of equipping our members for the work of ministry and for building up the body of Christ (Eph 4:12).

Starting on Sunday, February 19th, our adult Sunday School classes will be open for anyone to attend, and they will no longer be based upon any age segregation. We hope that this will give an opportunity for those who don’t attend regularly or don’t feel like they belong, to attend a Sunday School class.

From February 19th through March 25th, we will have one Sunday School course on the topic of the Church. Starting in April, we will have two Sunday School courses running concurrently with one considering basic Christian beliefs and the other studying the book of Colossians. We hope that you will prayerfully consider attending these upcoming courses.

Upcoming Sunday School Courses:

Feb 19 – Mar 25

The Doctrine of the Church
Have you ever wondered what the Church is? Or, maybe you have wondered why we have things like church membership, church discipline and the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. If so, this class will answer these questions specifically, looking at what the Bible itself has to say about the Church and its importance in the life of a Christian.

Apr 8 – Jun 24

Christian Beliefs
This class will consider basic doctrinal questions of the Christian faith like: What is the Bible?, What is the Trinity? and What is Election?

Colossians
This class will take an in depth look at the book of Colossians seeking to understand its theological significance and practical implications for today.

Note: The senior adult men’s and women’s classes will not be affected by this new schedule.

January 2012 Discovering New Heights Class

Have you been visiting New Heights for some time now and are interested in membership?

At New Heights, we believe that the New Testament demonstrates that local churches practiced meaningful membership. In addition, we believe membership provides many benefits like allowing church leaders to fulfill their task of shepherding the church, providing the opportunity for spiritual growth under the guidance, accountability, and authority of the church, and challenging believers to use their God-given spiritual gifts alongside others God has placed in the church, among others.

The Discovering New Heights class for January will begin this Sunday, the 8th and will run through the 29th. The class meets during the normal Sunday School hour at 9:30am. This class is our membership class designed for those who are currently pursuing membership at New Heights or are simply interested in finding out more about our church. We would love to see you there!

“The habitual position of faith”

Psalm 62:1: “For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.”

Our culture today does not like to wait, and I have to admit that I can be very impatient at times. In our fast-paced, fast-food society, I want to move quickly. I want to know things sooner rather than later and make decisions sometimes quicker than maybe I should.

But when we look at a verse like Psalm 62:1, we see how waiting upon God is a central task of our Christian life. To wait upon the Lord is to knowingly put our faith in God as we submit to his sovereign will for our lives.

Charles Spurgeon wrote this about Psalm 62:1: “To wait upon God, and for God, is the habitual position of faith”

Waiting in silence before God shows our faith in God as we look to him alone for salvation. As Spurgeon says, we should habitually be waiting upon the Lord. So, today as you rush around doing the things you need to do, are you waiting (trusting) in silence before the Lord?

New Sunday School Classes Beginning this Sunday, Nov 13

This Sunday, we will make a slight adjustment with two of our Sunday school classes. To help facilitate some changing demographics in our church, we will roughly group people by age into the following two classes:

  • Class 1 (35 and under including students) – taught by Matt Emadi with Aaron Boeving
  • Class 2 (36 and over) – taught by David Wells with Danny Allen

Both of these classes will also begin a new study on marriage and family matters. The curriculum will focus on forming a biblical foundation for marriage and family in addition to considering practical considerations for all age groups and walks of life. Everyone in the church, whether married or not, is affected by his or her relationship to a family, so we feel like it is an important topic to study. The family is a key arena in which both spiritual and cultural battles are fought, and we believe the Bible has much to teach us about these matters.

So, will you join us this Sunday at 9:30am? Our prayer is that our Sunday school hour becomes a vital teaching aspect of our church. We hope that you and your family will make it a priority in your commitment to the church.

Be a Christian because you are a Christian

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

Colossians 3:1-4 is a text that has been near to my heart for more than 10 years now. It is a text that awakened my heart to pursue full-time ministry and it is a text that still challenges me today.

When I first read these verses many years ago, I focused mainly on verses 3 and 4, and how our lives as Christians are completely and totally wrapped up in Christ. In fact my very life is Christ’s. But as I look at this passage today, I see more clearly how verses 3 and 4 are reasons that the Apostle Paul is giving for his command in verses 1 and 2.

In verses 1 and 2, Paul says that we should both seek and set our minds on the things that are above. In simple terms, this is the task of the Christian life, to seek God. Our task as Christians is to seek the things that are later mentioned in verses 12-17 like humility, meekness, patience and above all love. But Paul doesn’t it leave it there. In fact, he goes on to ground this imperative, this commandment to seek the things that are above, in both who you are already and what Christ has done for you.

We are to seek the things that are above because we have died and our life is now hidden with Christ. We are to seek the things that are above because our very life is Christ’s! We should seek to be Christians because we are Christians! Today, I challenge you to seek the things that are above because of who you are in Christ and what Christ has done for you, for: “you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”

“Discovering New Heights” Class Begins Sunday, Oct 9

On Sunday, October 9th, during our normal Sunday School hour (9:30 – 10:30am), we will be begin a new class called the “Discovering New Heights” class. This class is specifically designed for those who have already requested membership in addition to those who are interested in joining New Heights. Because this is a new class, all current members are also welcome to attend.

The “Discovering New Heights” class will meet on Sundays for 4 weeks and will be offered every quarter to accommodate potential new members throughout the year. During the 4-week class, Paster Cody McNutt will teach on topics like what is the Gospel, what New Heights believes, how New Heights is run and what membership at New Heights looks like.

This class will also serve to be an important part of our membership joining process and it will be a way for new members to learn about New Heights, as well as learn more about ways they can become more involved at our church.

By God’s grace, we have several families who have already requested membership at New Heights and some who are interested in joining. We hope to see all of you this Sunday, October 9th at 9:30am to learn more about membership at New Heights.
